7 Tips for Families of Conviction

Ways to cope and faith forward!

1. THINK THE BEST

It is natural to be concerned during this time but it is important to not get consumed with worry. In order to stay functional and be your best, keep your mind focused on the best possible outcomes and not the worst.

2. STAY INFORMED

Make sure to stay plugged in to CREDIBLE sources of information about what is going on inside of the department of corrections and the actual facility where your loved one resides. Being properly informed will help keep you calm.

3. BE PRODUCTIVE

Speak with your loved one and set some goals that can be achieved during this time. These may be individual or family goals, but they will provide  something to focus on beyond this crisis. Work on developing talent, skills, finishing parole packets or simply writing more- just be productive!

4. BE SENSITIVE

Remember that being in prison and being away from loved ones is stressful for everyone involved. Be sensitive about the thoughts, feelings, emotions, and needs of others. Watch what you post and how you respond because no matter the crime, time or if it is a prison worker, everyone wants to make it out of this crisis alive.

5. SHOW SUPPORT

Remember that this is a VERY stressful time for our loved ones behind the walls. If you find they are expressing their tension in various ways (short temper, being quiet, being anxious, etc.) remember to be supportive. Be patient, listen to what they say (or don’t say) and show support the best way that you can.

6. SHARE

Be a part of and help to build a community of support. We are all families of conviction so let’s share with one another. Share information, encouragement and resources (when available.) A little goes a long way and you never know the difference you can make.

7. LEAN IN TO FAITH

COVID-19 has shown us that at certain point we ALL are subject to the baselines of humanity. It has also caused us to look to something greater than ourselves to make it through. This is the time to pray, hope, trust and believe. Faith will bring us through!
